During the two years working in Kiev on Crytek's Free-to-play shooter Warface (out now in the West as well), I was always looking for Kustom Kulture related shops/events...
Kiev now has its Kustom Kulture Kiev Event, which shows a lot of the raw inventorship and energy. Unfortunately it took place one week after my last visit in Kiev - when I left the project to move on.
My only real 'hook' to the Ukrainian 'Kustom' scene is Andrew 'Ultra' N. and his Camaro.
By western standards, this car would probably not be considered the extravaganza to have & drive.
Buyers would rather put their money into a '32 Ford Rat Hot Rod. Well, we are talking about builders and drivers...
Andrew is spending all his time & money on pimping his car, tuning the engine (replacing the 3.7 with a 5.7 litres) and racing it on friday nights on an old race track outside of Kiev.
This race track has seen better times with only the start/finish section bwing somehow intact for drag racing. The rest is, like most of Ukraine's sowiet heritage, showing its age openly...
Anyways Andrew and his group called Detroit Clan get all my the respect for showing the spirit of the original '50s hot rodders: pimp the car for speed and race it. (Kozik talking in Dirk & Jesper's Flake 'n Flames movie really gave me a new perspective on the topic. might do a review at some point).
Check the professional time watch setup....
I hope to be there one day and spend some time with the gentlemen.
